Onion site not loading
#1
I was working on a personal onion site that uses Php, and everything was fine until about two days ago. I'm using a linux distribution for my site. My personal onion site suddenly isn't loading up on Tor. It says...
"The connection has timed out
The server at (mysite).onion is taking too long to respond."

I've also tried going onto my site on another machine, and the same thing happens. However, my site is up and running, and so is my webpage at localhost. Everything was working perfectly until recently. I also don't believe there could possibly be too much traffic, as only I go there. If anyone has any idea why this is happening, please reply.

The network is getting hit with a pretty bad DDoS AFAIK.
Imperial Library, darkfail, Dread all won't connect for me. Not just you, and unfortunately not much we can do about it.

"So normal Tor circuits (using exit relays) still worked, and v2 onion services still worked, but v3 onion services stopped working for that time period -- services wouldn't publish descriptors, and clients wouldn't fetch them."

"We need to figure out what is asking the dir auths for so many bytes, and get it to stop or slow down."

Our own site seems to be working fine for now: http://ytxmrc3pcbv5464e.onion/

Is the attack still going on? Although may be because I'm running onion v2.

Yes! And its really huge (!).

The difference between v2 and v3 is:

v2 SHA1/DH/RSA1024

v3 SHA3/ed25519/curve25519

And many more security/privacy improvement. Some local files are encrypted with v3 protocol.

Like the old Logjam attack (downgrade vulnerable TLS connections) an unknown group try to provoke .onion Admins to go back to weak v2 so that a specific attack will work (again).

Have no fear, dont worry it is probably a big fight between one .onion drug lord and us-american law enforcement - if the rumors are true.

We should rather stay out of the firing line?

Tor developers have quickly published a fix, not sure if this is stable.

For what I know the fix is just a quick fix and not very much tested, in fact, last time I checked you even had to compile from source.
I personally don't NEED to go on tor right now, so I am passing, when everything gets calm I will consider it again.

I am not aware of the politics of this attack, but I can totally see this conflict being the motive, these cartels were really into communications and the U.S. has been shutting off several communications channels of them for a long time. If you were not aware it is impressive what they achieved, making a whole cell network in the jungle even with self-sufficiency via solar power.

Yes, but only attacking v3 addresses. A lot of big websites in the tor network have created 'backups' v2 addresses just so people can access. Obviously, for people who are dealing with markets or really follow strict security policies this is not enough.

I2P and Freenet mirrors/backups might be a smart way to deal with situations like this. When my data center comes online i may experiment with I2P.

Now that you mention it. Might set up an I2P mirror of the forum in the near-future.
